Jeremiah 17:5-10

This is what the Lord says:

"Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.

Hey LL&L, I read this entry and loved what you said about trusting God and not going it alone. I've attached an e-mail I wrote to my daughter when she was having some difficulties with her boyfriend "Rob". I know it's a long response but the htought process ties in with your post. Hope you don't mind.

DUDE!!!,

Listen, I was thinkimg about our discussion Sunday morning. (Check it out! I spelled"thinking" with an M! , deal with it) Anyway I want you to consider a couple of things:

Did it ever occur to you that when we say to ourselves "Man, I hate when I do that, or think like that or act like that etc., that we must be dealing with two separate entities? The part that acts that way and the part that hates the way we acted? I mean seriously consider that. Why does one entity tell us "you really shouldn't be afraid of that" while another one causes us to act out our fears? You can tell yourself a million times "I shouldn't do that and this time I won't" and find yourself, no matter how hard you resist, acting exactly like you said you wouldn't. That's what happened when you swore you wouldn't act freaked out around Rob and found him telling you to chill. Because no matter how you tried what you really thought manifested itself. I'm pretty sure that looking at what you think is the key. Our minds function on a physical level. They are designed to respond to electrical impulses and chemical reaction. Really honey, that all there is to thinking. Your mind makes judgment's regarding the future based on it's past experiences. Sometimes that's good. A pit bull running at you down the street creates a response based on a knowledge that the dog is a danger to you and you escape. Most of the time however regarding the present in terms of the past is bad. The only way to truly control that is to really look at that other entity. The one that's telling you what you should do or believe. Next time you feel yourself acting differently then you know you should, or even exhorting yourself prior to acting ( OK, this time I'm going to be really cool, I'm not gonna freak out or act nervous or drink or cry blah, blah, blah) stop everything you're doing for a moment. Step into that other entity and look at the thoughts you're having. Alcoholics call this "watching the thinker". Review the thought process and ask, "what is that thinker really thinking?" Don't be judgmental. Don't beat the thinker up. She's only doing what she is biologically designed to do. Above all, don't confuse the thinker with you. She is not you. Write those words on your rear view mirror. Burn them into your soul. The thinker is not you. You are the entity watching and that entity has the control. Otherwise it could not tell you you should or shouldn't do something. Most people have chosen to ignore that other presence and constantly ignoring it eventually becomes our natural state.
Watch the thinker. Remember, though, don't judge her. As you practice this the thinkers thoughts begin to make you chuckle. You realize how preposterous they truly are. This takes time and practice but it happens quicker than you might believe now. Eventually you learn when to trust the thinker (as in the dog example) and when not to.
Focus on that other presence. It's that state in which you and God, for lack of a better word, are one and the same. Jesus told John the Apostle at one point when He was frustrated with him, " Have I not told you that ye are all gods?" Not many Christians will bring up that point but it's in the book. I'll trust my hero before a Christian. Even Moses wrote in the Bible that when he asked God what his name was, the answer was given "I am" is my name. Interesting, isn't it, that God would tell us when we call Him we are to say, "I am".
I'll close with the body of an e-mail I received today that reminded me of you:

The Concert
When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the father returned to his seat and discovered his child missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlight focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. To his horror, the father saw his little daughter sitting at the keyboard innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." At that moment, the piano master giving the concert made his entrance and quickly moved to the piano, whispering in the little girls ear "Don't quit........keep playing." Then, leaning over, he reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon his right arm reached around the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed what could have been an embarrassing situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else the great piano master played that night. Only the classic "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."

That, darling, is exactly how it is when you step into that other presence that is all you and all God. What your mind tries to accomplish is hardly noteworthy. We try our best but the results aren't always graceful and flowing. However, with the hands of that presence, the work of life becomes absolutely, stunningly beautiful. The next time you set out to accomplish something watch the thinker, but listen carefully. You may hear that master whisper in your ear "Don't quit.........keep playing." That other presence doesn't tell you that because you are equipped. It equips you because you called.

Self-esteem is based on past experience and created by electrical impulses and chemical reactions. Love is the only thing that matters.

Man, do I love you,
Papa
